Two British men have died after falling from a beach promenade in the Spanish seaside city of Alicante.

Spanish media have reported that the accident happened on Wednesday night when three Britons, believed to be in their 20s, were on the promenade of Punta Prima – an elevated area with a railing that runs around the beach.

According to El Mundo, the men were trying to take a selfie on the other side of the railing when two of them fell from a height of 10m to 12m (32ft to 39ft).

One man died at the scene, while the other died from his injuries after being airlifted to hospital.

The third man was treated for shock.

Local officials told El Mundo that the railings were in “perfect condition”.

An investigation has been launched, and the area where the accident happened has been cordoned off.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) has told Sky News that it is aware of the incident.

A spokesperson said: “We are supporting the families of two British men following their deaths in Alicante, and are in contact with the Spanish authorities. Another British man was involved in the accident, and we are also providing assistance.”

In 2018, a study suggested that 259 people died while taking selfies between October 2011 and November 2017.
