Luapula Province Minister Nickson Chilangwa has refuted media reports that Kawambwa Sugar Limited has closed its operations in the Luena Farming Block in Kawambwa District.
Mr. Chilangwa however wishes to clarify that Kawambwa Sugar has not escalatated operations because Zesco and the Road Development Agency have not connected the farm to the national electricity grid and done the road leading to the farm respectively.
He said the slowed down implementation process does not amount to paralysing operations neither does it mean that the company is opting out of the project.
The Minister further said government is fully aware of the challenges that have been encountered in ensuring that the necessary infrastructure is put in place and that the issue is being resolved.
“How can Kawambwa Sugar operations paralyse when, the company has not even started constructing a factory? The factory is earmarked for construction next year. So what is there to paralyse? What is there is the sugarcane plantation that is yet to be expanded. We expect the project to be expedited soon. Let’s stop misleading the public, “Mr. Chilangwa said.
Mr. Chilangwa has expressed shock that some people have twisted the facts to suit their agenda on the Kawambwa Sugar issue when they don’t even know where it started from.
