The The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) is saddened by the death of its League Manager Mr Katongo Kabungo.
Mr Kabungo died in the early hours of today (Monday) after suffering suspected high blood pressure at his home in Lilayi.
The deceased is a former FIFA referee having started out in 1973 and joined the FIFA panel in 1979.
He was appointed as a CAF Referees Instructor in 1997 and has groomed several whistle-men in the region and beyond.
Mr. Kabungo joined FAZ in 2010 as Referees Manager and later served as acting General Secretary in 2016.
He previously worked for the Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) from 1969 until 2001 when he retired having risen to the position of Deputy Commissioner Taxes Operations.
Mr. Kabungo died aged 75 and is survived by four children and seven grandchildren.
The funeral is being held at his farm in Lilayi.
FAZ president Andrew Kamanga has paid tribute to the former league manager.
“Football has lost one of its most resourceful personalities. Mr. Kabungo was a servant of the game and was accorded life membership at the last FAZ Annual General Meeting,” Kamanga said.
“We mourn with the family at this darkest hour and wish them God’s grace during this hour.”
