DEC arrests one person for possessing k4,000 counterfeit notes

    The Drug Enforcement Commission has arrested a person in Eastern Province for being in possession of K4,000 counterfeit notes.

    Hedges Katongo, male aged 43 of Kaloko Compound has been charged with being in possession of counterfeit notes amounting to K4000 in K100 bills.

    DEC public relations officer Mathias Kamanga has told Smart Eagles in a statement that Katongo was arrested in Mshawa Village in Chipangali District.

    “The Commission wishes to strongly reiterate its caution to members of the public to familiarise themselves with the features of the Zambian Kwacha and look out for unscrupulous individuals behind a spate of counterfeit notes as the Commission will not relent in its mandate to ensure that individuals behind such illicit activities are brought to book,” Mr.Kamanga said.

    He said the suspect has been released on police bond and will appear in court soon.

    And Mr.Kamanga said the Commission in Western Province has arrested Chipanga Mapeki, male aged 25 of Kaoma District for trafficking in 30.4 Kilograms dry loose cannabis and cultivating 10.3 Kilograms of fresh cannabis plants.

    “Further the Commission in Copperbelt Province arrested Stephen Sinkamba of Chiwempala Compound in Chingola, male aged 28 for trafficking in 23.8 Kilograms of cannabis that was concealed in a blue plastic bag. He was arrested at Willies shopping complex in Chililabombwe on the 6th April 2021,” Mr.Kambaga adds.

    ” In a separate incident the Drug Enforcement Commission arrested three (3) people in Central Province for being in possession of explosives on public transport. The suspects have been charged with possession of offensive weapons and materials contrary to section 85 (1) of the penal code act chapter 87 of the laws of Zambia and illegal purchase and transportation of explosives contrary to section 601 of the explosives act chapter 115 of the laws of Zambia,” He said.

    Mr. Kamanga said the suspects have been identified as Deophilly Kasonde, male aged 46 years a Miner from Luanshya, Edward Finch, male aged 54 a Business man from Chingola and Eden Mpundu, male aged 25 a Miner Engineer from Chambeshi.
