…equally suspends all forms of campaigns for the ruling PF and opposition UPND in Lusaka, Mpulungu, Nakonde and Namwala Districts.
The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has with immediate effect banned any form of campaign activities for the ruling Patriotic Front (PF) and the opposition United Party for National Development (UPND) in Lusaka, Mpulungu, Nakonde and Namwala Districts due to escalating levels of political violence.
And ECZ has suspended all roadshows countrywide in an effort to curb the spread of the deadly Covid-19 pandemic.
ECZ Chief Electoral Officer Patrick Inshindano has called on the Zambia Police not to allow any political activities by the ruling PF and the opposition UPND in the affected jurisdictions adding that the media is prohibited from covering any political activities from the mentioned areas.
“Additionally, the Commission has suspended all political party road shows (including those of independent candidates) as the findings on the ground indicate that the road shows are not only in breach of the Covid-19 protocols but also Electoral Code of Conduct,” he said.
“Political parties have Marely converted road shows into mobile rallies ignoring all the guidelines that were given to them.
The Commission was very categorical when we did present the Covid-19 protocols and we did indicate that whatever activities had to be with minimal contact with crowds but his has not been the case.”
